The Rock Stars club is designed to introduce a wide range of skills which will enable young people to develop the necessary knowledge and techniques to be able to climb safely in an indoor environment.
Young people are split into two age groups – Juniors (7-11yrs) and Seniors (12-16yrs), and each age group has three levels (Bronze, Silver and Gold) to work through to allow for progression and personal development at your own pace. Each level comprises a combination of the following elements, each pitched at a suitable degree for the age group and the ability required for the level: - Warming up and down - Fitting your own harness and helmet correctly - Tying the rope into your harness correctly - Tying a variety of climbing knots - Loading a belay device correctly - Belaying safely, either as part of a team or individually - Climbing to the top of the wall using specified holds within your ability (for example for beginners this may be using any colour, once you have progressed further into the scheme it may be using a designated colour only) - Bouldering within your ability - Descending the wall correctly - Understanding and observing wall safety rules and etiquette
Each child will receive a log-book and set of record sheets, and at the end of each session their instructor will tick off on the relevant record sheet those elements which the child has completed during the session. Once the record sheet for a level is complete then the child can progress to the next level. Each level should allow a seamless transition for climbers moving from one level to the next within their age group, and also for those moving from Junior Gold to Senior Bronze level.
By Silver and Gold levels, Senior Rock Stars should be climbing confidently and smoothly, and should be able to link moves and sequences fluidly. They should also be beginning to read routes before commencing climbing, enabling them to plan their climb and predict moves and sequences. Climbers at this level should also be conducting pre-climb checks for themselves and their partners as a matter of course.
The Rock Stars club does not operate on a 'drop-in' basis – members are expected to demonstrate a level of commitment. Sessions are booked and paid for in advance in 6-week blocks which will run (approximately) to each half-term. The cost is £48pp per half-term, inclusive of entry to Llangollen Climbing Centre and all tuition and equipment (except climbing shoes, which can be hired on the day if required).
Sessions run on the following days: Juniors (7-11yrs) Wednesday 6:15pm-7:45pm Fridays 6:15pm-7:45pm
Seniors (12-16yrs) Monday 6:15pm-7:45pm
